Height growth regulation in a crowded stand

Although being tall is advantageous in light competition, plant height growth is often similar among dominant plants in crowded stands. Nagashima and Hikosaka manipulate plant height of Chenopodium album by lifting or lowering potted plants in an outdoor experiment at a high plant density, and find that lifted plants reduce vertical growth and maintain a similar height to their neighbours despite potential advantages in terms of light interception. The treatment affects stem thickness, suggesting a trade-off between mechanical stability and height growth.
