Looking Over The Aegean Sea To The Lesbos Island / Temple of Athena, Assos (2)

Description: You can Tweet THIS by clicking HERE:) Temple of Athena, Assos History of Assos The city was founded from 900-1000 BC by Aeolian colonists from Lesbos, who specifically are said to have come from Methymna. The settlers built a Doric Temple to Athena on top of the crag in 530 BC. From this temple Hermias of Atarneus, a student of Plato, ruled Assos, the Troad and Lesbos for a period of time, under which the city experienced its greatest prosperity. (Strangely, Hermias was actually the slave of the ruler of Atarneus.) Under his rule, he encouraged philosophers to move to the city. As part of this, in 348 BC Aristotle came here and married King Hermeias's niece, Pythia, before leaving to Lesbos three years later in 345 BC.... More at this LINK or this LINK. History of The Lesbos Island According to Classical Greek mythology, Lesbos was the patron god of the island. Macar was reputedly the first king whose many "daughters" bequeathed their names to some of the present larger towns. In Classical myth his "sister", Canace, was killed to have him made king. The place names with female origins are likely to be much earlier settlements named after local goddesses, who were replaced by gods. ..... ..... When the Persian king Cyrus defeated Croesus (546 BC) the Ionic Greek cities of Anatolia and the adjacent islands became Persian subjects and remained such until the Persians were defeated by the Greeks at the Battle of Salamis (480 BC). ..... ......In Hellenistic times, the island belonged to various Macedonian kingdoms until 79 BC when it passed into Roman hands. During the Middle Ages it belonged to the Byzantine Empire. In 803, the Byzantine Empress Irene was exiled to Lesbos, forced to spin to support herself, and died there. In 1355, it was granted to the Genoese Gateluzi for economic and political reasons. The island was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1462 and was known under the Turkish name of Midilli. It remained under Turkish rule until 1912 when it was ceded to Greece. The cities of Mytilene and Mithymna have been bishoprics since the 5th century. Important archaeological sites on the island are the Neolithic cave of Kagiani, probably a refuge for shepherds, the Neolithic settlement of Chalakies, and the extensive habitation of Thermi (3000–1000 BC). The largest habitation is found in Lisvori (2800–1900 BC) part of which is submerged in shallow coastal waters. There are also several archaic, classical Greek and Roman remains. Vitruvius called the ancient city of Mytilene "magnificent and of good taste". Remnants of its medieval history are three impressive castles. Lesbos is the birthplace of several famous persons. In archaic times, Arion developed the type of poem called dithyramb, the progenitor of tragedy, Terpander invented the seven note musical scale for the lyre, followed by the lyric poet Alcaeus, and the most famous poetess Sappho. Phanias wrote history. The seminal artistic creativity of those times brings to mind the myth of Orpheus to whom Apollo gave a lyre and the Muses taught to play and sing. When Orpheus incurred the wrath of the god Dionysus he was dismembered by the Maenads and of his body parts his head and his lyre found their way to Lesbos where they have "remained" ever since. Pittacus was one of the Seven Sages of Greece. In classical times Hellanicus advanced historiography, Theophrastus, the father of botany, succeeded Aristotle as the head of the Lyceum. Aristotle and Epicurus lived there for some time, and it is there that Aristotle began systematic zoological investigations. In later times lived Theophanes, the historian of Pompey's campaigns, Longus wrote the famous novel Daphnis and Chloe, and much later the historian Doukas wrote the history of the early Ottoman Turks. In modern times the poet Odysseus Elytis, descendant of an old family of Lesbos received the Nobel Prize. SPRİNG CLEANİNG; (24.03.2011) 60 "comments" have been erased. Sunflowers

Sunflowers

Description: So is it a weed or is it a flower? I am sure people in the plant-community get as exercised discussing these categorizations as I do about talking about categorizing photography. You would not believe the millions of words and sentences wasted discussing photography and how to categorize one type of photo. I can only assume the same thing happens in the flower/botany community! I got this one with my friend Scott Kublin one day in the south of France. We had Fabien (the website designer) pull over on a tiny little road so we could pop out and get some sunflower photos. I think he almost got rear-ended while waiting on us, so he had to pull away then circle back to get us! On the second drive-by, he started honking so we had to run and dive into the car like it was an action movie. - Trey Ratcliff Read more at the blog at www.stuckincustoms.com.

Vårligt underlägg!

Description: Spring coaster! Dedicated to all of my ♡ dear flickrfriends ♡ (I have missed you)! :o) Since my last upload it took just a few hours until I started to crochet again. :o) The spirit of crocheting came back! I don't know for how long but I've started on a new little crochet thing after this one. The spring coaster is crocheted in cotton yarn (and then sugar starched) and crocheted especially for my favourite teamug/jug (which is about 13 cm high). ♡

Milkweed aphid, Aphis nerii

Milkweed aphid, Aphis nerii

Description: Another member of the milkweed zoo, the milkweed [or oleander] aphid protects itself with cardiac glycosides, just like the monarch, and several beetles and true bugs. Botanists put milkweed and oleander in the same family now, based on DNA evidence. ============= "The oleander aphid (Aphis nerii Boyer de Fonscolombe) is a distinct bright yellow aphid with black legs, antennae, cauda (tail-like appendage), and cornicles (tubes that extend from the abdomen). It is thought to originate in the Mediterranean and probably spread as oleanders were introduced around the world. The aphid is now found in tropical and temperate zones worldwide. When the oleander aphid finds its preferred hosts, plants in the Asclepiadaceae and Apocynaceae, the population explodes. All of the aphids are females; they reproduce by parthenogenesis (clones of the mother) and they bear live young (nymphs). If conditions become too crowded on a plant or the plant declines in health, some of the aphids develop wings and will colonize new plants. The aphids' bright coloring is a warning to predators. The aphids sequester the cardenolides (cardiac glycosides) produced by the milkweeds and dogbanes. When a predator disturbs the aphids, they exude the cardenolides in a waxy compound through the cornicles. Predators usually back away and clean the defensive compound from their mouthparts. The amount of cardenolides present in milkweeds and dogbanes varies with the species, the age of the plant, and the season. Aphids that feed on plants with low amounts of the glycosides are more likely to fall prey to generalist predators like spiders, ladybug larvae, and aphid lions (lacewing larvae). Generalist predators that survive eating the oleander aphids suffer the effects of the cardenolides. Fewer aphid lions survive to become lacewings and reproduce. Ladybugs develop deformed wings. And spiders weave strange disrupted webs. The Bug Guide has posted a great photograph of oleander aphids taken by Lynette Schimming.
